Origins of the harness

The word "harness" originates in animal husbandry. A harness made an animal useful to humans by allowing it to be put to work. Humans could attach carts, plows, or other tools to the harness, thereby harnessing the animal for service.

This term was used in animal husbandry as early as 3,500 BC and subsequently found its way into many other fields. In the maritime world, for instance, the safety gear used to secure a sailor—preventing them from falling overboard—is also called a harness. Climbing safety gear goes by the same name. Pets that shouldn't be pulled by the neck are fitted with harnesses (which are also used for safety during car rides), and mothers often put their energetic children on a leash or a walking harness.

The term "harness" has also long been used in Japanese bondage, though there it was primarily employed to bind and restrain prisoners.

The harnesses used today in fetish and party settings combine elements of both origins but are primarily symbolic in nature.
