Stories from the World of Kink Coaching
“A cheeky brat needs a juicy punishment!” or “Good boy, you did that well.”
While these lines might sound like something out of an outdated parenting manual for overwhelmed parents, they would be perfectly at home in a play session between a Daddy and his Little.
As a kink coach, I frequently encounter relationship issues—such as in the following example involving a Little (or, more specifically, a “brat”) and their boyfriend—or Daddy. But before I dive into the details, what can you expect from this article?

How does Age Play work?
"Little," "Brat," "Daddy," and "Mummy" are roles within Age Play. This is not a form of pedophilia or pederasty; rather, it is a role-playing activity in which participants enter a "headspace" that allows them to unleash their inner child or assume the nurturing role of a parent. The role-play can function entirely without BDSM or sexual elements, though these can be integrated depending on the specific variation. A person's actual age has no bearing on the age being played; in terms of real-world years, a "Daddy" might actually be younger than the "Little."
What is a "Little"?
A so-called "Little" is an age player who enjoys stepping into the role of a very young person. Depending on the age they are portraying, a Little might wear diapers, cuddle with a large stuffed animal, play with building blocks, dolls, or other toys, act in a childish or silly manner, sometimes soil their diaper, sleep in a playpen or crib, get their diaper changed, make a mess while eating, and—in a sense—re-experience the early years of life. There are many possibilities. Some Littles can speak, while others cannot or use "baby talk." A Little does not necessarily have to be a baby; rather, they view themselves as someone at the beginning of their development and enjoy the sense of ease that comes with it.
What is a "Brat"?
A specific type of Little is the "Brat" (or mischievous child). This is essentially the cheeky version of a Little—someone who enjoys teasing their Daddy or Mummy. A Brat has a mind of their own but may desire to have that will broken and to be controlled through physical and psychological dominance—in other words, through discipline. Concretely, this can take the form of clear words, commands, rules, the threat and implementation of punishment, or similar measures.
What is a "Daddy" or "Mummy"?
The counterpart is the Daddy or the Mummy. This role takes care of the "Little," offering cuddles and affection, setting rules and providing guidance, cleaning up the mess left behind, getting annoyed by the "brat" phase, and alternating between being sweet and stern with the Little—basically, just like parents are, or ought to be.
However, age play goes far beyond just that; there are many variations, such as Grannies, Puppies, Furries, Guardian Angels, Lolitas/schoolgirls, and the like. Personally, for instance, I like the idea of playing the mean big brother who teases his younger brother. He looks up to me adoringly, and I take full advantage of that ;)

The Situation
Every kink coaching session is unique and tailored to the specific partners involved. The following example was created with the participants' consent; names, details, and preferences have been altered to ensure anonymity.
The consultation addresses the situation of two clients who identify as a "sub" and a "switcher," respectively. Both are interested in kink and BDSM and share many commonalities. One shared preference is "Little" or "Brat" and "Daddy" play, though the specific ways they express these roles differ.
“A” is a sub—specifically, a "Little" or a "Brat." He has a mind of his own but enjoys being dominated and having his resistance overcome to steer him in the desired direction. “A” is seeking long-term "training" or guidance. His approach is essentially: "I’ll be cheeky and difficult until you take care of me." He craves attention, but also the feeling of having someone who sets boundaries and looks after him. He doesn't actually enjoy being cheeky for its own sake; what matters to him is his Dom’s reaction—which entails not only attention, closeness, and affection but also leadership, direction, and clear instructions. He feels good when he behaves as his Dom desires. However, if the Dom fails to react, “A” becomes increasingly cheeky—a behavior he actually dislikes.
“B” is a switcher. He can be very dominant but also enjoys being dominated himself. In the relationship, he sees himself as a "Daddy" figure, though he is still inexperienced in this role. “B” reached out to me asking how he could be more dominant. From “A’s” perspective, “B” isn't dominant—or consistent—enough; consequently, “A” becomes increasingly cheeky, a dynamic that makes him feel uncomfortable. Several attempts where “A” explained the process to “B” fizzled out after a short time, and “A” reverted to being cheeky. As the "Daddy," Partner B is expected to love and care for his "Little"—a role that aligns perfectly with his interest in being a boyfriend. However, the strict disciplinarian is not his natural persona; he is a "switch" who has to actively play this part. While he enjoys the role, maintaining it requires constant attention. Furthermore, Partner A’s cheeky, dominant nature makes A appear more dominant, causing B to yield—something B actually finds appealing, as he doesn't mind being dominated by his boyfriend.
The Challenge of Roleplay
The issue with roleplay is that it is, essentially, a game. For a certain period, we adopt a specific role and the mindset that goes with it. Yet, this is usually not our natural state of mind. If we have fully internalized the role, we can maintain it easily—and for longer periods. If we feel insecure in the role, however, keeping it up requires significant effort and strain. It demands constant focus, preventing us from truly relaxing or letting our guard down.
The situation changes when we can fully identify with the role—when we know and master it so well that we practically live it. If we aren't lucky enough to integrate the role into our everyday persona, we end up "acting" in daily life while living out our true inner selves through the roleplay. But now we’re getting philosophical...
Engaging in roleplay is like being an actor: we can either learn the lines, actions, and character traits by rote, or we can bring the character to life by internalizing their qualities and quirks, allowing the dialogue and actions to flow naturally (apologies to any actors if my limited knowledge has led to an inaccurate description).
Ultimately, one has to be capable of doing one or the other. One must therefore either have learned actions, words, and typical reactions, or have internalized the character.

How can the relationship handle this?
Naturally, I suggested various types of play and offered tips on good Dom behavior. They experimented a lot, tried out new things, and injected more excitement into their dynamic. However, it must be said that "B" does not inherently possess the personality of a "Daddy" or a "Dom-only" type. He is excellent at the role temporarily, and it provided them with great new input for their sessions. Yet, it remains a role that demands expression just as much as his "sub" side does; he cannot sustain this dynamic in the long run. Consequently, we continued the conversation.
While a successful long-term relationship requires many compromises, fundamental needs should not be suppressed. "A" is already feeling the strain of not being able to fully express this aspect of himself, and he notices the negative impact on his own personality and the relationship. "B" understood that he could not take on the desired role permanently. Naturally, a breakup was not a solution for either of them—it was a last resort. They therefore agreed to find a sort of "substitute parent" figure for "A"—someone who could take on the role of "parenting" or caretaking in the long term.
In this process, it is crucial to jointly discuss and establish the requirements and the ground rules for opening up the relationship in this area, ensuring that neither partner feels overlooked or held back.
Where can I find more information?
Finding a "Mummy" or "Daddy" isn't easy, and so far, they have only found someone for an interim arrangement. Still, it is another step in the right direction toward a functional, fulfilling long-term relationship. We have been looking around various "Little," "Brat," and "Age Play" groups on FetLife, JoyClub, and Facebook, and we will naturally also include gay-oriented platforms like Romeo and Recon in our search.
Of course, one can also find what they are looking for through related fetishes, such as the diaper fetish. Beyond online platforms, there are also local meetups and events dedicated to the subject. The following terms are helpful for search engines: Age Play, Little, Brat, AB/DL, Adult Baby, Diaper Lover, TB, Teen Baby.
